Delhi Rises to Dangerous Haze After Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered breathing extremely polluted air that fell into the "severe" category.

Extremely High Air Quality Levels

Various sections of Delhi registered an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended limit recommended by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy standards.

Fireworks Restrictions and Current Developments

Since 2020, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous smog that covers the capital as colder weather approaches.

Yet recently, the recently formed regional leadership approached the supreme court to request a relaxation of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically questioned by conservation groups as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Court Ruling and Reality

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, judges complied with the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific hours throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was considerable disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Several air quality sensors throughout Delhi recorded air quality peaking around the night hours to the most severe readings observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

Regional Implications

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Pollution Issue

The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Near Diwali, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak readings ever measured in Beijing, which was formerly considered as the planet's dirtiest city.

Diverse Pollution Sources

The situation in the city is resulting from a mix of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in nearby states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers regularly burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the city as winter air arrives.

Health and Economic Impact

Public health and economic toll on the approximately 33 million people living in the capital region is significant, according to multiple investigations.

These hazardous conditions leads to high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can result in oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand untimely fatalities annually in the city.
