The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
