Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
